Revenant Saga

Become a Revenant and find the truth beyond revenge in this gothic fantasy RPG with stunning 3D battles!

After being turned into an immortal being known as a 'Revenant' and learning of the existence of a demon within him, Albert sets out on a journey to make the person who did this to him pay with their very life. However, as he runs into others along the way dealing with their own figurative demons, what is the answer he finds...?

Boasting a story that blurs the lines between good and evil, and plenty of content to go around, this is one title not to be missed! This includes a variety of unique subquests, in-battle transformation systems, as well as a weapon forging system allowing players to make entirely unique weapons as they battle in turn-based battles with 3D animation!

this game has its redeeming qualities, but overall, it was a big disappointment for me personally. kingdom hearts 1 was one of the serious biggies I played as an adolescent, so when I finally got around to playing this game as an adult, I was shocked by how mind-numbingly bland and one-sided the combat was, as well as the horrid story presentation carried by nothing but dialogue delivered in poor to mediocre voice acting, and I was only able to play through a good portion of the game because it played into my nostalgic attachment to the first part. makes me at once curious and afraid to replay the first part to see if it still holds up to the memories of my adolescence, or if I find it has the same glaring mistakes as this game.

good, but overrated.

fun and wit: the game

don't really get the amount of praise this game receives. it's an alright game, good soundtrack and all, but the whole pace of the game feels really sluggish to me, which is not a good thing given how comparatively little variation in gameplay it offers. oh well, I guess it's just not for me.

fucking classic, not least due to its incredible soundtrack.

this is a game focussed around the challenge of listening to an annoying ass narrator preventing any chance of you getting invested in the game world.

the story and characters aren't exactly dostoyevsky, but the platforming, aesthetic and presentation are top-notch.

rock solid gameplay, funny and charming game world, stellar presentation, AND I can play around with characters' genders? this is a good game, I guess.

the highest achievement to date in building a fun, engaging and memorable game world for children to simply play around and get lost in.

best video game soundtrack of all time, still untouched after over 20 years.

the flawed classic. if you can live with (or even enjoy) being an underpowered weakling and dying many tedious random deaths until you have finally learned the game's rules and used the broken weapon upgrading system to its full extent, what you are left with is a surprisingly manageable game of unparalleled world building, deep atmosphere, gritty and challenging combat, fantastic sound design, and breathtaking visuals. inconsistent, but one of the most revolutionary and important games of the 2010s.

the flawed classic. if you can chew your way through the initial obscurity, overpowered enemies and tedious random death far enough to get to the point where you can use the broken weapon upgrading system to its full extent, what you are left with is a surprisingly manageable game of unparalleled world building, gritty and challenging combat, fantastic sound design, and breathtaking visuals. one of the most revolutionary and important games of the 2010s anyway.

worse than both the first and the third parts in even their respective weaker aspects, with severely flawed and uninspired difficulty design, less fluid combat, and less cohesion in level design. there is fun and immersion to be experienced here, but it's disappointing compared to the rest of the series.

dark souls 1 remains untouchable in the bold and uncompromising realisation of its vision, in its focussed world design and in its incredibly rich and deep atmosphere, but this game deserves credit for fixing a lot of the gameplay problems of the first part (not to mention the second) for the most streamlined, accessible and generally satisfying gameplay experience in the series.

the difficulty design unfortunately has plenty of hiccups, but when it works, it makes for some of the deepest, most immersive and tense gameplay and atmosphere of all time. definitely one of the most important titles of the 2010s.
