Revenant Saga

Become a Revenant and find the truth beyond revenge in this gothic fantasy RPG with stunning 3D battles!

After being turned into an immortal being known as a 'Revenant' and learning of the existence of a demon within him, Albert sets out on a journey to make the person who did this to him pay with their very life. However, as he runs into others along the way dealing with their own figurative demons, what is the answer he finds...?

Boasting a story that blurs the lines between good and evil, and plenty of content to go around, this is one title not to be missed! This includes a variety of unique subquests, in-battle transformation systems, as well as a weapon forging system allowing players to make entirely unique weapons as they battle in turn-based battles with 3D animation!

gorgeous game.

good, but inconsistent game (apart from the soundtrack, which is straight through awesome). characters, voice acting, writing, gameplay, level design, etc. all have both moments of glory and of shame. even the whole "paying homage to classic platformers" thing sometimes is nothing but a simple rip-off. let's hope the developers' next game ties up its loose ends.

"so guys, we've been doing more or less the same shit for the past 15 years, how can we freshen up this franchise?" - "how about exchanging 50% of our formula with shadow of the colossus, demon's souls, and portal?" - "what? that's ridiculous!"

the great innovator that started it all. dark souls did further improve on many central aspects of this game's unique concept and added more elements to the formula, but it also reused a good chunk of this game's world, including not only most game mechanics, but also characters, levels, and so on. it's without a doubt demon's souls that laid the foundation of the souls subgenre with its bold vision and the phenomenal implementation thereof. a revolutionary game. classic.

it's a bit weird to see this game generally be referred to as the great classic of souls games since it's basically just a beefed up version of demon's souls, but it is a more than worthy follow-up. does have some glaring inconsistencies in difficulty design, but if you can live with (or even enjoy) being an underpowered weakling and dying many tedious deaths until you have finally learned the game's rules and used the broken weapon upgrading system to its full extent, what you are left with is a surprisingly manageable game of unparalleled world building, deep atmosphere, gritty and challenging combat, fantastic sound design, and breathtaking visuals. successfully builds on the foundation laid by its revolutionary predecessor to craft something truly special. one of the most important games of the 2010s.

a return to form after the disappointing dark souls 2. doesn't quite reach the heights in world design or richness and depth of atmosphere that demon's souls and dark souls 1 did, but deserves credit for creating the most streamlined, accessible and generally satisfying gameplay experience in the series mostly thanks to its more fluid combat and more consistent difficulty design.

worse than all other parts of the souls series in even their respective weaker aspects, with severely flawed and uninspired difficulty design, less fluid combat, and less atmospheric tension. there is fun and immersion to be experienced here, but it's disappointing compared to the rest of the series.

dark souls is rightfully considered the great classic of the souls franchise because it improved on almost every central aspect of this game's unique concept, but this is where the foundation of the subgenre was laid and its bold vision was successfully implemented. this is the revolutionary innovator that started it all.

the flawed classic. if you can live with (or even enjoy) being an underpowered weakling and dying many tedious random deaths until you have finally learned the game's rules and used the broken weapon upgrading system to its full extent, what you are left with is a surprisingly manageable game of unparalleled world building, deep atmosphere, gritty and challenging combat, fantastic sound design, and breathtaking visuals. still inconsistent, but it successfully builds on the foundation laid by the bold and revolutionary demon's souls to craft something truly special. one of the most important games of the 2010s.

this game has its redeeming qualities, but overall, it was a big disappointment for me personally. kingdom hearts 1 was one of the serious biggies I played as an adolescent, so when I finally got around to playing this game as an adult, I was shocked by how mind-numbingly bland and monotonous the combat was, as well as the horrid story presentation carried by nothing but dialogue delivered in poor to mediocre voice acting, and the only thing keeping me with this game for the couple of hours I played it was my nostalgic attachment to the first part. makes me at once curious and afraid to replay the first part to see if it still holds up to the memories of my adolescence, or if I find it has the same glaring mistakes as this game.
