Revenant Saga

Become a Revenant and find the truth beyond revenge in this gothic fantasy RPG with stunning 3D battles!

After being turned into an immortal being known as a 'Revenant' and learning of the existence of a demon within him, Albert sets out on a journey to make the person who did this to him pay with their very life. However, as he runs into others along the way dealing with their own figurative demons, what is the answer he finds...?

Boasting a story that blurs the lines between good and evil, and plenty of content to go around, this is one title not to be missed! This includes a variety of unique subquests, in-battle transformation systems, as well as a weapon forging system allowing players to make entirely unique weapons as they battle in turn-based battles with 3D animation!

after going into this in 2020 as my first elder scrolls game and without any nostalgic attachment to the series, all I can say is that this game has been completely obliterated by games such as the witcher 3 and the souls games.

replaying this in 2020 made me realise just how much the souls series is indebted to this game in terms of style and level design. definitely a classic, even if it suffers from the same technical issues that every fumito ueda game suffers from. still more functional than the last guardian, though.

sick cunt game

in the moments when it works, this game is one of the most phenomenal works of interactive art ever produced, aesthetically and conceptually perfected with an unbelievable love for detail. when it doesn't, it can get technically dysfunctional to a point where it truly takes you out of the experience. the framerate issues or the huge tutorial button prompts which are displayed for the entirety of the game are the least of problems here; where it gets aggravating is when you spend ten minutes trying to get trico to do something and you're not sure it's not doing it because it's not the right solution to the puzzle or because the a.i. isn't working as it should, all while constantly having to fiddle around with the godawful controls and camera. with this game's degree of polish, it's hard to believe it could have such severe issues. if fumito ueda and his team could finally get the technical aspects of their games right, they could possibly make the best game of all time.

dark souls 3 with slightly better atmosphere and slightly worse consistency. the chalice dungeons suck, but the rest of the game is oozing personality and the insight mechanic makes for some of the coolest details in video game world building (as expected from a miyazaki game).

when you have ten minutes to quickly tear up with sheer aesthetic gratification

Silent_protag

starts out incredibly strong, but gets really repetitive and boring in its second half. the first holds some of the finest stuff videogames have to offer, though, and has aged really well, unlike the game's predecessor.

overrated

glory to arstotzka

the battle/skill/levelling system is really engaging, but the game started feeling repetitive halfway through. still a really good game, worth checking out.

innovation and boldness of vision. the original souls game that pioneered a new style of game design. less deep and expansive than its better-known successor, but more immediate. what a revolutionary game. classic.

the atmosphere is there, but the gameplay starts dragging pretty quickly. still definitely worth checking out.

gameplay is pretty shit, but the game's got CHARACTER

merlynstrogen

never seen a game with a bigger discrepancy in quality between the first and second half. starts out really strong with emotive visuals and music, and a great overall experience (apart from being one of the most insultingly easy games ever made), but after the central turning point, it's literally just a bunch of copypasted filler, even in the final dungeon. I'll always have fond memories of the first half, but the second half has to be the worst case of artificial game lengthening in the history of video games. what were they thinking?

pretty neat

Deleted user

feels pretty uninspired compared to the rest of the series, with a cringy intro, mostly forgettable characters, and less atmospheric tension overall, but still a pretty good game with addictive souls gameplay if you can take it for what it is and chew your way past some really bad game design here and there. still definitely the weakest souls game anyway.
