Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

December 14, 2020 at 9:58 AM 0 comments

Age of Calamity is the first "Warriors" game I've played. I was excited to give it a try, as I had skipped on the first Hyrule Warriors for the WiiU and the Deluxe edition for the Switch. I was also excited since it was going to be canon. The game takes place before Breath of the Wild and will help flesh out the world more. However, you actually beat Ganon in this game. You're supposed to lose to Ganon, thus causing the Great Calamity (as the name implies). But this doesn't happen. So that was a little disappointing. I think some of the story events could still be considered canon if you throw away the parts that clearly aren't, so that's probably how I'll construct my head-canon. But all that being said, I really enjoyed the combat and map layout. It got a little "grindy" towards the end, and that got annoying, but otherwise, it was a really fun game. The combat was great and the characters were crazy, in a good way. They let you play as King Rhoam, the Great Fairies, Monk Maz Koshia, Terrako, and (if you 100% the game) Calamity Ganon himself! It's a really fun game, and it's definitely one you'll enjoy if you liked Breath of the Wild.

Portal

This game blew my mind! I picked it up back in 2016 but somehow lost my savefile and gave up instead of finishing the game. Upon finding out how short it actually is and that I could beat it in a few hours, I picked it up a few days ago. When I played it the first time, I was blown away by how the portal gun actually works. This time through, I knew how to use the gun and how to use it well, so I breezed through the early levels. The part that blew me away this time was the ending. I knew that you had a final boss fight with Glados, but I knew nothing of the setup. Glados directs you to get on a platform and you obediently get on. This platform leads you into a fire! I was playing this at 11 PM or so, and when I saw this the only thing I could think was, "SHE'S SENDING ME TO HELL!". That not only gave me chills but also spurred me on to finish the game that night. You're supposed to use the gun to get off the platform and sneak around the complex in areas you shouldn't be in. All the while, Glados is whispering in your ear, "Get back to the platform. Then you'll get your cake." The cake is a lie folks, and immensely glad I played this game. You should try it yourself if you haven't.

VeggieTales: LarryBoy and the Bad Apple

I was super into VeggieTales as a kid, so when a VeggieTales video game (starring LarryBoy!) came out, me and my older brother had to pick it up. I don't think I was ever good enough to beat it as a kid lol. However, replaying it out of nostalgia at age 17, it was really easy. I beat it in one sitting. It took me 50 minutes. All that to say, this game hasn't held up super well, haha. I enjoyed replaying it, but I can't say it's all that good. I do love the soundtrack and pixel art, but that's about all the game has going for it.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - Ultimate Sith Edition

A cool Star Wars themed hack and slash. I has a ton of unlockables like lightsabers and costumes that are fun to mess around with. The game did bog down for me in multiple cases, however. The game has many moments where it will bug out and be unplayable, resulting in a reset. That was a little annoying, but I'd still recommend it to any Star Wars fan with a Steam account.

Rayman Legends Definitive Edition

This game is fantastic! I picked it up on a whim when I saw it was on sale for $10 dollars on the Nintendo Eshop. What a ride! Me and my little brothers had a blast playing it. The co-op is fantastic. We had so much fun running around frantically trying to save all the "Bois" (teensies) in each level. If you like good 2D platformers, good co-op play, and hundreds of collectibles, buy this game. Rayman Legends Definitive Edition is 100% worth it's full price of $39.99 (if you can get it cheaper though, why not?). And I haven't even played through any of the additional content!

Updated: And the music! I forgot to mention the music! The score is masterful, incorporating a ton of instruments. The tunes are super catchy and will get stuck in your head. They even have music themed levels, where they give you the illusion that when you hit an enemy the music responds to it. It's super cool.

Good Job!

This game is a blast! I played it co-op with my youngest brother (he owns it), and, boy, did we have fun. In "Good Job!" you solve puzzles and try not to make a mess. Or try to make a mess. That's up to you! Its controls are very simple but there's a lot of depth. You can finish most levels in multiple ways. Pick it up if you have a local co-op friend to play with.
